31 August, 2015 August Favourites 2015
Unlike July, where the weeks flew by at an alarming rate, August has been a little slower. The entire population of London seemed to migrate to warmer climes, and I was stuck in the rain. To compensate for the lack of sunshine, I made a conscious effort to try some new products and indulge in a few pamper evenings, and through this, I’ve found some fantastic favourites that I’ll definitely be using as we move into Autumn. I hope you enjoy my August favourites – don’t forget to share yours in the comments below!
My first August fave is rather fancy, and it’s the Burberry Effortless Mascara (£22 here). Burberry describe this mascara as buildable, and that it creates a ‘customised lash look’. Buildable mascaras typically drive me up the wall, as ‘buildable’ often translates to ‘wimpy’ upon application, but in this case, I rather enjoy it. A coat or two creates a glossy, defined and fanned-out flutter, but after three or four my lashes look thick, voluminous and high-impact. The extra-long wand helps me to maintain a steady hand and the wand itself has dense natural bristle brushes, which hug the lashes and deposit product right at the root.
I’ll always be on the hunt for the perfect mattifying, smoothing and pore-minimising primer, but for now, I’m happily sticking to the L’oreal Infallible Primer Matte Base (£7.99 here, review here). This lightweight, velvety primer contains cyclopentasiloxane (a form of silicone) that blurs pores, controls oil and generally gives good skin. I love this both under full-coverage foundation or a lighter base, and the way makeup applies over this is just divine. An essential for oily skin!
A gorgeous partner to the L’oreal Infallible Primer is the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (£29 here, review here). I reviewed this on Monday last week, and it’s been the only base I’ve worn since. Creamy, pigmented and surprisingly forgiving on shiny skin, this cancels out redness and hides minor imperfections, without masking over the natural texture of my skin. It’s oil-free and a definite winner for oily-combination complexions. I wear the shade Alaska by the way.
You all know I love a face mask, and one that’s been a saviour on hormonal breakouts is the Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleansing Masque (£27 here, review here). I always get a couple of ‘lurkers’ on my chin and jawline, and this helps to reduce swelling, draw out impurities and speed up the healing process. It can be quite intense so I would definitely recommend using a hydrating spray or serum afterwards to balance things out.
It wouldn’t be a monthly favourites without lip products, and the two I’ve been loving this month are the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria (£23 here), and the Bobbi Brown Lipstick in Blondie Pink (£20 here, review here). Both are gorgeous takes on the deep nude trend: Very Victoria is slightly more of a ‘greige’ tone, with a beautiful hint of mauve that looks incredible with a tan (sadly mine has disappeared), and Blondie Pink is the perfect ‘my lips but better shade’, with hints of beige, pink, red and rose, that makes it one of the most beautiful shades in my collection. I’ve raved about it countless times so this definitely shouldn’t be a surprise to long-time readers! The formula for Very Victoria is creamy, matte and malleable, whereas Blondie Pink is more of a traditional cream, both in the formula and the finish.
Last up is the Vichy Beautifying Micellar Cleansing Oil* (£13.75 here). During #NoBuyJuly the Escentual PR team sent this over (genius bit of marketing there) as I had run out of makeup remover, and I am so pleasantly surprised with this cleansing oil! I took this to Mykonos with me and it did a great job of removing heavy makeup, including a LOT of waterproof mascara and sunscreen. The texture is very similar to my HG makeup remover: The Body Shop’s Silky Camomile Cleansing Oil, but a bit more heavy-duty. The spray bottle helps to disperse the right amount of product and it’s super soothing, considering how effective this is. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re in need of a new makeup remover, and there’s a site-wide sale on until tomorrow at Escentual (just use the code ESCENTUAL25 for 25% off any order).
