The Perfect Winter Base

20 January, 2015 The Perfect Winter Base

For the longest time, I had been on the hunt for a full-coverage, matte foundation. I love my BB creams from Garnier and Bellapierre (reviews here and here), as well as the gorgeous Diorskin STAR (review here) which is one of my all-time favourites, but I wanted a change from the very skin-like base those foundations offered. Everything in Boots and Superdrug was looking a little too dewy and sheeny for me, and there wasn’t anything catching my eye from my favourite high-end brands for base products like MAC, Laura Mercier and NARS. During my trip to Paris last December, I tested the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + foundation, and was blown away with how perfect it was – I’ve finally found my holy grail foundation *angels sing*.

It had been on my radar for a while due to the product-enabling behemoth that is the Sephora website, and I loved that it had such an extensive shade selection encompassing virtually every skin tone. There are 20 shades offered, ranging from porcelain to deep chestnut, with slight variations such as beige, yellow and pink, depending on the warmth or coolness of your skin.

Whilst testing this out in-store, I was so impressed with the quality of this foundation. Full coverage? Check. Natural, matte finish? Check. Handy plastic bottle with a squeeze tube for exact coverage depending on your mood and skin condition? Check, check and check again. I was matched to shade 30 (Porcelain), which is meant for medium skin with beige undertones, although this has a pleasantly yellow tinge to it, which really perks up my skin and neutralises any redness or discolouration. This foundation is quickly becoming the only base I’ll reach for when I need my makeup to last all night (or day, depending on where I’m going), and because it doesn’t have any SPF, it won’t make you look like a ghost in flash photography.

I labelled this post ‘The Perfect Winter Base’ because during these cold, frosty months, my skin can take a little more coverage and a thicker slap of product without dissolving everything into a sweaty, oily mess. This foundation can be sheered out when applied with a Beauty Blender, but for me, the most flawless and pore-free coverage comes from applying it with the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush (£9.99 here). This helps to buff the product into the skin thoroughly, whilst also retaining that airbrushed effect you often find with high-coverage foundations. The dense bristles and domed shape makes it easy to apply the product under the eyes and into the corners of the nose, and pack on the coverage on more red and discoloured areas, like my cheeks.

Along with this gorgeous new foundation, I’ve fallen back in love with the Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Miracle Skin Perfector. This is a lightweight, silky primer that glides onto the skin, fills in pores, and evens out discolouration. It wears so well with the Make Up Forever Mat + Velvet foundation and doesn’t bunch up underneath it or move throughout the day. These two products together are the perfect base for winter skin and I’ll definitely have these two in my collection for years to come, as they offer a guaranteed good skin day.

I’ve read on a couple of blogs that Make Up For Ever will be available in the UK soon, but until then you can purchase the Mat Velvet + foundation from Amazon here (prices start from £31.90), and you can buy the Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Miracle Skin Perfector here for £23.

What do you think of these two products? Have you tried either of them? Let me know in the comments below, as well as your recommendations and questions, and I’d also love to hear which foundation you’re wearing at the moment!
